Material choice has a bigger impact on the final look of a display model than most makers expect. The same 3MF file can look matte and flat in basic PLA, or striking and collectible in a silk or gradient filament.
PLA: the default for most display prints
PLA remains the best starting point for indoor display models:
- Excellent detail reproduction on fine features
- Low warping on open-frame printers
- Wide color range from every major brand
Use PLA when the model lives on a shelf, desk, or cabinet away from heat and direct sunlight.
PETG: when you need toughness
Choose PETG if the model may be handled often or sits in a warmer room. It flexes slightly instead of snapping and resists UV better than standard PLA, at the cost of a little surface shine.
Silk, matte, and multi-color filaments
For character models, specialty filaments add the most visual impact:
- Silk PLA — glossy finish that reads well on camera and in display cases
- Matte PLA — reduces layer lines on large flat surfaces
- Multi-color / gradient — great for energy effects, crystals, and bases
We design models with clean color breaks so you can assign filaments per part in your slicer.
